Suggestions for New Puppy Owners
|
Prepare your Home -Always puppy-proof and create a safe area that the puppy will be kept in. Your puppy needs to learn to behave and not to chew or damage furniture or your personal items. A lesson best learned through guidance rather than reprimand
Discipline – A dog understands disapproving facial expressions, shaking the scruff of the neck, growls etc. Never discipline by raising a hand to slap or hit your puppy. It is inappropriate and you will make the puppy hand shy. When your hand is raised toward a puppy it should only be to pat, praise or pick up. |
Puppies and ChildrenNever allow young children to pick up the puppy. Young puppies squirm and can easily be dropped and injured.
Training Basics –First and foremost always Reward Good Behaviour when training your puppy.
It is VERY important to let your puppy know what behaviour is expected and what behaviour is not acceptable. Poodles are eager for your approval but your puppy needs to understand what behaviour prompted the praises or rewards. A reward can be verbal praise or a treat but for your puppy to learn your response to good behaviour it MUST BE IMMEDIATE. |
